Health & Safety at EMU

Safety is everybody's business. Whether the situation involves faculty lecturing to 300 students or interacting with a class of 25, or faculty and staff conducting scientific research using chemicals and dangerous equipment, or secretaries and custodial staff providing essential support services. Everyone needs to be informed about health and safety risks and to take responsibility for ensuring a safe and healthful work environment for all the people involved.

All questions regarding health and safety should be directed to the Health and Safety Office at 487-0794, which is part of the Department of Public Safety. The Eastern Michigan University Health and Safety Administrator is Kathryn Wilhoff.

The Health and Safety Office is charged with providing health and safety training to EMU employees on at least an annual basis and with producing and disseminating the document "Eastern Michigan University Safety Policies and Procedures."

Some of the topics covered in the document are:

  • Fire safety
  • Extreme weather, natural disasters, and other emergencies
  • Power failure
  • Loss prevention
  • Hazardous materials disposal
  • Chemical spills
  • Personal protective equipment

The document also describes the responsibilities of various supervisory personnel with respect to health and safety, and lists communications procedures, including telephone numbers for such areas as:

  • Fire Department -- 911
  • Police Department -- 911 or 487-1222
  • EMS -- 911
  • University Health Services -- 487-1122
